 Alfred N.  Goodman 

Alfred N. Goodman has been a partner of the firm since 1975. He has extensive experience in patent, trademark and copyright law including litigation, licensing and prosecution in the U.S. and foreign countries. He also has significant experience before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office including appeals, inter partes reexams and ex parte reexams. His clients include Fortune 500, domestic and foreign companies.

Mr. Goodman has authored over 300 patents in the fields of complex mechanical and hydraulic systems, optics, lasers, solar energy, medical devices, oil exploration and production and business methods.

He has also participated in over 100 patent, trademark, copyright and trade secret lawsuits in federal trial and appellate courts, representing companies such as American Farm Bureau, Armco, Countrywide Home Loans, Hubbell and Marriott.

In addition, Mr. Goodman has also participated in the negotiation and drafting of over 150 intellectual property licenses, sales agreements and settlement agreements worth over $2 billion.

Mr. Goodman has testified as an expert witness and has drafted legislation for the U.S. Congress on transgenic animals and patent infringement exemptions. He began his career as a patent examiner at the USPTO.

Career Highlights

  • Authored, successfully prosecuted and negotiated the license and sale of the basic U.S. patent covering the LASIK corneal modification technology: U.S. patent 4,840,175.
  • Authored and prosecuted patents in the U.S. and 20 foreign countries covering point focus solar energy concentrators: U.S. patents 4,288,146; 4,312,326; 4,322,176; and 4,324,083. These concentrators formed the basis of one of the first economical solar plants in California, generating 10,000 kilowatts of solar energy.
  • Authored and successfully prosecuted in the U.S. and 10 foreign countries one of the basic patents on soft shell, fiberglass-reinforced lightning surge arresters: U.S. patent 4,656,555. This patent has protected the sale of over $500 million of these arresters.
