Internet & Media

The Internet has revolutionized the way people communicate and do business, and with this revolution comes new challenges to protecting and defending IP assets. We help our clients manage, protect and defend their IP assets in both online and offline media, ensuring that your rights, as well as your stakeholders, are protected at all times.

Our Internet and new media experience is broad as well as deep. Whether we're developing website agreements for content distribution, protecting domain names or litigating invasion of privacy, our focus is on protecting and defending your IP assets and individual rights.

We have represented our clients on a range of Internet related issues including:

  • Registration and protection of domain names
  • Domain name disputes and resolution proceedings using the Anticybersquatting Consumer Protection Act (ACPA) and the ICANN Uniform Dispute Resolution Procedure (UDRP)
  • Privacy policy compliance
  • Spamming and hacking
  • Protection under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act
  • Website policies and corporate site governance procedures
  • Content distribution and software development agreements and licensing
  • Linking, metatags, online promotions, portal placement and website design
  • Jurisdictional issues for infringement actions and risks
  • Collection, transfer and use of customer information
  • Internet related trademark agreements and disputes
  • Review of online content and advertising

In the area of free speech, we have litigated defamation, SLAPP actions, negligent publishing, invasion of privacy, rights of publicity, newsgathering torts and Public Record Act lawsuits. We also counsel clients on miscellaneous First Amendment and comparative advertising law issues. The firm has a substantial track record in "John Doe" lawsuits, in which an individual's right to anonymous speech is at issue.

If litigation is necessary, we have significant experience in federal and state courts across the country. We have, and will continue to be, on the leading edge. Roylance Abrams won the first court ruling that Internet message boards are protected forums for the expression of opinions and filed the first lawsuit against a leading portal for privacy violations.

Our reach also extends beyond our borders to include domain name registrations and related practices throughout the world with the help of our extensive network of lawyers and firms in other countries.

Located in the heart of Washington, D.C., we are a short distance from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, the U.S. Copyright Office, the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia and scores of other agencies and courts.
